Stunning scenery, wonderful wildlife, and an eclectic mix of tar and easy gravel roads make this a holiday tour to remember and tell your friends about. Along the coastal roads, over the mountains and across the little desert, you will take home some fantastic memories and leave behind a piece of your heart.
Arrive at Cape Town International Airport where we will transfer by air-conditioned transport and transferred to the wonderfully located Luxury Guest House. Here you can relax for the rest of the day and prepare for the next 11 days on the Garden Route. All this while you soak up the wonderful views of Table Mountain and Robben Island. The team will meet you for dinner at one of the local restaurants and the programme for the next 11 days will be discussed. We really don’t think there is a better way to start this fantastic adventure tour. Briefing in hotel at 18:30 followed by dinner.
Cape Town to Hermanus
Transfer from guest house to pick up the motorcycles. After a briefing about the bikes and finalising the paperwork, we are on the road via Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point where the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the warmth of the Indian Ocean. Here you will have the chance to take photos and a ride on the funicular railways to the top of the point. From here it’s back on the road for the journey up and over Sir Lowery Pass and on to Hermanus for your first stop-over.
Hermanus to Cape Agulhas
Leave Hermanus after breakfast and seek out some fun on gravel roads. Heading East, we will arrive to overnight at the most Southerly point of the continent of Africa, Cape Agulas. A photo of the sunset is pretty much a must here.
Cape Agulhas to Oudtshoorn
You will have an early breakfast today and then head North to cross the mountains via Tradouw Pass. Once over the mountains you will pick up the R62 to take you across the Klein Karoo (Little Desert). Passing along the way the world famous “Ronnie’s Sex Shop”. Don’t panic – it’s just a bar with a funny story about how it got its name. Ronnie will be more than happy to tell you the tale. On through the town of Ladysmith and arriving late afternoon in Oudtshoorn. Here we will stay in wonderfully appointed tents at the Buffels Drift Game Lodge, one of the best Game Reserves in the area.
After the long ride of the previous day, today is a chance to relax in and around Oudtshoorn. At your own pace, you can enjoy a rang of wildlife activites from croc cage diving to game drives. If you want to do some more riding then Alex will take you up and over the famous Swartberg Pass, which is generally regarded as one of the best gravel passes in South Africa. Again overnight at Buffels Drift Game Lodge.
Oudtshoorn to Knysna
Well rested, you now head South on mainly gravel roads. Riding through some of the most amazing passes on roads the like of which you won’t find in the UK, you’ll head towards Knysna with its great selection of bars and restaurants. Some stunning sunsets to be seen here and the chance to sample some of the best oysters in the world. Alex will show you some of the places that go unnoticed by regular tourists.
Knysna to Wilderness
Riding East along the Garden Route on the N2 highway, we head towards Tsitsikamma National Park. Here the brave among the group will have the opportunity to try the World’s highest bungee jump. The rest can watch and admire the views. Adrenaline rush over, you head back West on N2, taking in Nature’s Valley en route, and eventually ending up in Wilderness, a diamond in the Garden Route. Time and weather permitting, Alex will lead you via the gravel roads through the forests. Your accommodation tonight is a little taste of luxury as we relax in the Wilderness Hotel.
Wilderness to Swartberg
After breakfast it’s back on the road to head Northwest using a mixture of tar and gravel roads. Returning to the Klein Karoo, we will overnight at The Retreat, a guesthouse which borders the 129,000ha Swartberg Nature Reserve. This is truly a “get away from it all” experience. The Retreat is a former Victorian Tobacco Farm which is now converted to a very high standard. Dinner is taken on the veranda in the evening alongside other guests and the owners.
Enjoy breakfast in the sun and watch the amazing birdlife, which is a passion of The Retreat’s owner, Marie. Take advantage of the many walking trails on the property or even swim in the fresh water dam. If you wish, you’re free to ride around the area and take lunch in one of the surrounding small towns. Overnight once again at The Retreat.
Wilderness to Witsand
Leave the tranquillity of the Reserve behind and head South through small towns and over the Langeberg Mountains to the Garden Route coastal town of Witsand, where you will overnight at The Whale Watchers Inn.
Witsand to Hermanus
From Witsand, we ride West on gravel roads while keeping an eye out for wild tortoises, which are quite a regular sight in these parts. Experience the crossing of the Breede River by raft (yes, raft – this IS Africa!) and then continue West to spend the last night of your road trip back in Hermanus where you can relax, do some local craft shopping, and have your final dinner with the group.
Hermanus to Cape Town
An easy start to today. After breakfast you can take a wander around the local market, then it’s back towards Cape Town via the Coastal Road and up and through the famous wine town of Stellenbosch. If the group is keen, we can arrange to visit the local township named Zwelihle. This will involve riding the bikes into the location and meeting with the people who run some of the local community projects. After the visit, it’s back into Cape Town by mid/late afternoon to return the motorcycles. This is surely the best Garden Route Motorcycle Tour on the market today.
Relax in hotel and enjoy Cape Town. Lunch will be at the Rhodes Memorial overlooking the city or you can take the cable car to the top of the mountain! Fly home the next day.
